Some of the replies to him which concentrated on minor problems were IMO
unnecessary nitpicking when there were more important issues to address.
However I think the basic problem was that he had written some code to
address a specific use case of his - dumping WMV streams - and once it
worked well enough for his private use he was unwilling to develop it
further into a generally useful, reliable and maintainable video filter.

I didn't look at that in detail, but my impression is that his patches
were not so good that they could have been immediately applied as is.
They were also large and about features that most developers would not
use. So what would have been "good treatment"? Maybe he could have been
informed better about the status of his patch or something; however I
don't see how any developer could have got the patch quickly accepted
(without doing a lot of work himself in that area which most are not
interested in).
