It's "supposed to be" as claimed by the PCI IDs in the driver.
I've just updated it with official Vidix repo.
But many people from GeeXboX projects seemed to have regression with 
Rage128 and Radeons < X series with this new driver so I'm a bit 
struggled (I don't and won't have access to Radeon cards to test and trial).

About your R5XX assumption, it might be true, at least it's the way 
nVidia does it. In case of nVidia, all GPUs > NV40 do no more have 
overlay engine and so XV is done through texture blitting.
Guess it's the same way for new ATIs.
