Actually I believe this should depend on some mysterious bigendian
register flag (which reminds me, did you try this both before and after
X startup? I think it sets this mysterious flag, but it might be set by
default by the BIOS).
But at least this seems to fix it for Diego, we will see if somebody
complains about it after this change *g*
