Because it's reasonable and widely accepted (in European countries at least).

That's preposterous. You can scroll through any list, regardless of how it is
sorted. So far only you are so vocal about sorting the list by first name.
Apparently, keeping it as it is isn't a problem for anyone else, so please
stop being unreasonable and let the majority decide.

It isn't nonsense. I, for example, remember the surnames of key developers
pretty well.
