I don't know. UTF8 is the default for my editor.

Yes, and otherwise it will break whenever mplayer is used in
non-iso8859-(1/15) locale, or do I misunderstand something?
Also, the only bad consequence is that my name isn't readable, right??
I can of course use some other charset if you want, though I don't think
it has much of an advantage.
And I could also write oe instead of ö, but I would very much prefer not
to. It annoys me enough than my bank does that kind of nonsense because
the are unable to make their printers output any (not so) "special"
characters.
