Turns out yes, there is; I hadn't read the entire --help output in so
long I had no idea that was there. I think the warning as he worded it
is overly strong, at the least because there *are* a *few* such options
which don't merely override autodetection - --enable-gui and the like -
but if that problem can be addressed then I could support such a thing.

I was getting towards suggesting this earlier, when I asked if there was
any situation in which most of the --enable options actually served any
functional purpose (i.e., in which the main code would compile but
autodetection would fail). If the answer to that question is no, then
I'd say that this seems like the only sensible course of action - though
I agree with Rich's caveats.
