Yes, subversion now supports a filesystem backend (fsfs). They introduced
it in version 1.1, it became default in 1.2. Seems like they learned a
lesson there. The database backend can be painful if it gets corrupted
(though the reason is usually admin error), I know because I had to recover
one manually at work... But the filesystem backend is reliable and nothing
else is being considered here.
