Is libavc-options.txt really a _developer_ reference? No, it has info
about lavc's more esoteric options that only a handful of people on
earth have a clue about. But it has nothing to do with coding a video
player or video encoder in general or MPlayer/MEncoder in particular,
am I not right?

You have a point, but the current situation is unacceptable. We have
this information duplicated across several different places and
keeping them in sync is a royal pain. We decided some time ago that
all options should be described in the man page if only for the reason
that it should be possible to find all information there and not have
to hunt for it in several obscure places most of which have feature
outdated stuff. The man page is in for an overhaul, no question,
maybe even the idea of putting mplayer and mencoder together needs to
be revisited. If you have any bright ideas, step forward. In the
meantime I think that redundancy is our worst enemy.
