I think there are cases where the dirs drift or you may want to compare perf 
of an older libavcodec with a newer as an example. and if code worked before 
it's simple to add:
#if BUILDMACRO >= new_build
new code;
#else
old code;
#endif

look eg. ar ve_ffmpeg.c it's used there.
