Excellent idea, I once thought about general purpose screenshot func together 
with Nick, but there was no clean solution at that time. Now filter layer is 
the perfect place for it, how about allowing something like -screenshot-vo 
jpeg|png|etc.. and the screenshot filter will init that specific vo on 
request (can filters react to VO_CTRL?) and dump single frame to file.
