Thanks, but that was only an extra short example to demonstrate the problem.  I didn't know that
mencoder was out of commission.  I guess ffmpeg can do everything (scaling, cropping, deinterlacing,
etc.) that mencoder could do, so I "just" need to get used to a new program.
