I believe f4f is used for Adobe's own HDS format. Neither ffmpeg nor
mplayer/mencoder support it currently.

I have used the script AdobeHDS script successfully once in a while,
and have also failed a few times.

To use it, you should look for a so-called "manifest" file (similar to
a playlist), and hand it to the script, or download all the f4f
fragments and let the script assemble them.

Note that script is written in PHP. Not my language of choice,
especially since it introduces loads of dependencies on my system's
installation, but at least the script exists. :-)
