Thank you for the explanation!

I suspect using FFmpeg filters volumedetect and volume 
should allow you to achieve a similar effect with 
better quality.

A filter such as the one you currently use was 
discussed yesterday on ffmpeg-devel, maybe you can 
help the development;-)
