mencoder -dvd-device VIDEO_TS/ dvdnav://01 -profile mpeg4 -lavcopts 
turbo:vpass=1:aspect=1.777 -vf crop=720:480:0:0,scale=496:320 -aid 128 -oac 
copy -sid 1 -o missouri_breaks-1.777.avi -nosub -passlogfile 
missouri_breaks-divx2pass.log etc.
and the closed captions are always here :--((
