[MEncoder-users] MP4 to PCM never finishes

I have seen strange results with -vc null and/or -novideo, including crashes
and infinite loop. I must confess that, as the inconvenience was minor, I
was always too lazy to investigate further or do a proper bug report.

Try with -vo null: it would be unnecessarily slow, but it may work. You
could also try using ffmpeg rather than mplayer.
