With mbtree on that's normal...you would see a log file produced on the
first pass.  Unless you're absolutely serious about the options you've
supplied, you should do a slow-firstpass.

You won't see an mbtree log file on a single pass encoding (it's not
needed for obvious reasons).  If mediainfo says mbtree=1, then it's on
and you're good to go.  x264 defaults it to on, and mencoder honors that
default.
