Thanks for the suggestion, Laine!

The problem was that I had libxvmc installed, but not libxvmc-dev.
Because of this, $libs_mplayer had this naked trailing -l at the end.
I solved the problem by "apt-get -y -q build-dep mencoder" ;-)

But the error message "missing libavutils" is irritating anyway.
