Actually, several things you've posted make me think your dvd
player is either set up wrong, or doesn't handle pulldown or
aspect ratio changes correctly. Or was it somebody else who was
having pulldown issues even after remuxing with mplex? In any
case, the massive cutoff you are seeing certainly sounds like
the aspect ratio setting on the dvd player is not correct.
It sounds like the dvd player is set 16:9, but the TV is 4:3.
