No, you are missing the point. Both avi and mkv are *not* codecs, but
container formats. If you just copy (instead of transcode) the video and
audio streams from a mkv container to an avi container- the quality will
be the same.
As to mpeg, if the original video in the mkv container is a mpeg stream
then you can just simply do a copy and will not loose quality. If the
original is not a mpeg stream, you will need to transcode, thus loose
quality.
