[MEncoder-users] Minimize posterization in areas of low contrast when downscaling HD h.264 to mpeg2video

I'm still refining methods for using MEncoder to convert 1920X1080 h.264
captures to standard 16X9 DVD format using lavc with mpeg2video output. What
are some things I can try that will help minimize posterization in the parts
of the picture that have low contrast?

Also, is there a way to crop to get an output file with true 2.35:1
proportions rather than just creating 16X9 output with black bars? Thanks.
