[MEncoder-users] Problems with 'volnorm' filter when the 'method' parameter is set to '2'

As of late I've noticed that use of the 'volnorm' filter, specifically
'volnorm=2', results in problems when playing certain raw or encoded
MPEG-2 video streams with a primary AC3 audio track using Mplayer and
Mencoder respectively. The problem usually manifests itself as
follows : For several seconds ( the time varies ) after initiating
playback it sounds as though the 'volnorm' filter has not kicked in
-- ie. the volume sounds as if the 'volnorm=2' filter has not been
used -- after which the volume level will suddenly increase and
usually remain at said increased level throughout the remainder of
the playback. Changing the 'method' parameter to 1 -- ie. 'volnorm=1'
-- usually fixes the problem at the expense of quality.

Does anyone know what might be causing this, and how to remedy it?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Jonathan
