Hallo,

this is Vincenzo De Florio, a researcher with the University of Antwerp,
Belgium. Here I am doing some research on adaptive systems and one of my
current projects is a system that senses the amount of CPU and the
end-to-end bandwidth currently available and should modify some process
in order to adjust encoding, transmission and rendering of a video to
the currently available assets. Ideally what I'd need to have is a sort
of mencoder in slave mode, such that I may control the encoding
parameters on the fly, e.g. switching from mpeg4 to mpeg2 encoding
depending on how much CPU and bandwidth is available. The produced
stream should then be sent out to a client for final rendering. I
believe this is currently not possible with mencoder. Is there any plan
to achieve this in the future? Do you have any suggestions on how to
find workarounds or other strategies? Which part of mencoder should I
"touch" to embed custom behaviors such as this? I would be grateful if
you could also reply to address "vincenzo dot deflorio at ua dot ac dot
be". Thank you in advance and many thanks for contributing with this
excellent media encoder!

Kind regards,

Vincenzo
