[MEncoder-users] re-encoding avi to normalise sounds (and turn into 5.1)

I have some avi files that seem to have their sound turn down, every time I
play them on the stereo I have to turn the volume right up.

So I have done some looking around and found mencoder -af volnorm=1

This seems to do the trick, whilst reading up about that I also found surround,
centre and sub, figure I would give that a go as well.

my source
orig.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x 540, 25.00 fps, video: DivX 5,
audio: Dolby AC3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)

plays okay with mplayer, I can skip forwards and backwards and everything stays
in sync - just that sounds is quiet

just to make testing easier I cut it down with

mencoder orig.avi -o a.avi -ovc copy -oac copy -frames 3000

a.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x 540, 25.00 fps, video: DivX 5,
audio: Dolby AC3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)

Every thing is okay with this I can skip forward and backward and everything
stays in sync

I do my work
mencoder a.avi -o b.avi -ovc copy -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=ac3 -af
volnorm=1,surround=15,center,sub -channels 6

it finished okay, but when I play it, the sound volume has increased, but when
I try to skip ahead or backwards the sounds starts from the beginning

b.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x 540, 25.00 fps, video: DivX 5,
audio: Dolby AC3 (6 channels, 48000 Hz)

seems like the audio index is out ???? I seem to remember making 5.1 DVD's a
while back but using a tool called multimux.

Is what i am trying possible with mencoder. I have tried just doing the volnorm
filter but the same problem !

Thanks
Alex
