Yes, somewhat, but the -i option would have prevented file from giving
useful information if it could.

Either your setup of file is broken (check with a valid AVI file you have
nead at hand) or the video is not AVI at all, neither any format known to
file. A possible explanation would be that the file has been somehow
garbled.
