It's OK, IMO any core 2 machine have enough bus banwidth to feed 2
mencoder processes.

This performance is way too bad. I have tested your options on Sempron
2300+ (1580Mhz) on some DVB source (720x576 at 25fps) with -endpos 6:00. My
results are 24.62 fps in 360th second of encoding for 1st pass and 5.08
fps for 2nd pass.
Try to encode with options from MPlayer docs, so you will have some
measurements.
You can consider using libavcodec with ffourcc="xvid" option foer
encoding, it's faster with mencoder.

With this much bitrate you can consider keep the original. But It IMO have none speed effect.
