Hmm, I don't know, I haven't used alsaconf in years. (Fedora doesn't
include it.)

For one, capture is usally muted. Furthermore, I didn't want to have to
remember to unmute it and set the correct volume everytime before
starting a recording.

Because with the source I was using, the sound would be overmodulated.
Trial and error I guess. "YMMV" is the correct term. :)
