[MEncoder-users] Incorrectly recognised file format

I've just batch converted a whole bunch of dv files (captured by Kino)
into avi files containing dv video data (and PCM audio).
The command line I used was:
mencoder filename.dv -oac pcm -ovc libdv -o filename.dv.avi
This worked perfectly for all but 2 of the files.
The 2 that didn't work, both gave the following output:
MEncoder 2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu17+medibuntu1 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+ (Family: 6, Model: 10, Stepping: 0)
CPUflags: Type: 6 MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 1 SSE2: 0
Compiled with runtime CPU detection.
success: format: 0 data: 0x0 - 0x2eb35280
MPEG-PES file format detected.
MPEG: FATAL: EOF while searching for sequence header.
Video: Cannot read properties.
The ones that worked, detected the file format as: libavformat
Is there any way to force the detection of 'libavformat'? I've been
trying out the '-demuxer' option, but '-demuxer help' isn't working,
so I'm in the dark with that one.
