Subject: ripped vobsub subtitles very dark when played
To: mencoder-users at mplayerhq.hu

I encoded a film that I wanted to watch with and without the subtitles, so I
used the -vobsubout option in mencoder while ripping. When I play the
rip with the
subtitles,
mplayer rip.avi -vobsub subs

the subtitles show up very dark, so that I can't really read them. When I
play the dvd the subs are mostly light, with some transparency, and there is
still some transparency with the ripped vobsubs, but it is as if the light
parts have been replaced with black. Anyone else have this problem, and know
the solution?

I remember doing this same thing without problems in the past, using older
versions of mencoder/mplayer. I was thinking that there may be a way to edit
the .idx file to give palette information? This is just a guess based
on something I read in relation to vobsub subtitles, and the solution
to my problem may have nothing to do with that. This is the beginning
of the .idx file, it doesn't show anything about palette or color:

but I read something about extracting palette information when ripping vobsubs.
