I am having similar prob reencoding slow h264/mkv videos to avi for
playing on my 1.6ghz laptop .. all of them ended with - at 47% ..

Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?
For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.

I noticed the problem would be at vorbis because apparently, most
video which i was having problem to play and of which I tried to
reencode to avi are h264 with vorbis audio within mkv container ..
h264 with mp3 audio and others works well even on high resolution ..
(or should i post this in mplayer-users list instead?)
