I have had generally excellent results with eq2, but it does take
some fiddling to get the correct settings for any given file.
The most useful of the eq2 variables are gamma and brightness.
For what you are trying to do, something like:

 eq2=1.1:1:0.1

Might be a good starting point. If it's too light, try 0.05 for the
third value. eq2 is a lifesaver.
