Really? Mmmh, I usually go with these settings

bframes=4:subq=7:frameref=5:partitions=all:direct_pred=auto:
trellis=1:b_pyramid:weight_b:8x8dct:me=umh:keyint=300:turbo

and until now mplayer has never had problems playing
the resulting avi videos.
