[MEncoder-users] Warning streams need a type

Hello all,
What does this message mean?
1) I captured video using Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150MCE. I
used a custom DVD quality profile. Perhaps this was my
undoing.
2) I used mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy to -endpos xxx to
trim a few unwanted seconds from the file.
3) I noticed the following messages when I tried to skip ahead
using the arrow keys:
UP-arrow:

Cannot seek backward in linear streams!
Seek failed
The "Cannot seek" message also appears several times before
the video starts playing.
RIGHT-arrow

I can skip ahead, even though MPlayer tells me that the seek
failed.
4) I tried to fix this by re-encoding with my usual script. I do
not get the "Cannot seek" message with the new file, but
it skips the same distance whether I use the UP or RIGHT
arrow (about 5 seconds).
5) I made a DVD from the original video. I can seek in the
DVD on the computer, but not on the standalone player.
It does not seek. Instead, it displays an icon in the top
right corner of the screen. It displays the same icon when
I press the menu button, so I assume that the icon means
"Can't do it". The standalone player hangs when I try to
fast-forward.

I reduced the bitrate when I made the copy.
The movie is 2 hours 6 minutes long.
Is there a way to fix this file, even using something besides
MEncoder?
I am using MEncoder dev-SVN-r25096-3.4.5 on Windows XP.
I made the DVDs with dvdauthor 0.6.14-GfD-1.
