hmmm, Ok, now I'm doing a second encode of this DVD with the exact same 
options I used for the first encode, only this time I added -fps 30000/1001 
in addition to -ofps 24000/1001

When I did the first encode *without* -fps 30000/1001 mencoder repeatedly 
displayed stull like... dexum_mpeg: NTSC content detected, switching framrate 
and demux_mpeg: progressive NTSC content detected, switching framerate. Now 
on my second encode, I'm already at 10% for the first pass and I haven't seen 
these messages... so I guess it could have something to do with the 
missing -fps 30000/1001 option when I did my first encode?
