Try, 
mplayer -dumpaudio -dumpfile audio.ac3
mplayer -dumpvideo -dumpfile video.m2v
then replex with mplex (mplex from mjpegtools)
mplex -V -f 8 -etc -etc -etc.............
the Continue the steps as you said.

Though some people always disagree with this method.
it has always worked for me. 
The mencoder mpeg muxer........!
