Thanks for all the tips!

It looks like it was an issue with the build I was using because when I
switched to the binary 1.0rc1 on the official website I was getting properly
sized output files.

Also thanks for pointing me to the IVTC.  I don't think it had anything to
do with this problem, but its something I should know about anyway.
