[MEncoder-users] vhs camera

Hello,
 
 I hope this is the right list for this question:
 
 I am inheriting a VHS camera. I would like to somehow be able to connect this camera (not VHS tapes, but the camera itself with the little tape that goes inside it), and transfer my recordings to something that I can watch on my computer. I'm actually not even sure what file type it would be, perhaps AVI?
 
 My system is Fedora 4 with this kernel: 2.6.15-1.1833_FC4.
 
 I don't have a television, and I don't have MS Windows.
 
 Could someone please advise me on what hardware and software I might use?  I've heard of the Hauppage WinTV USB thing, but am not sure if that works with Linux.
 
 If this is the wrong list, could someone recommend another list?
