Which will sort of work for avi. The overhead is large though :)

I once tried make a variable-fps avi with mencoder, capturing from a webcam,
using -vf decimate to only store when something happened. (Think security
cam). The avi overhead was well over 50% for the final avi of a day's
activity :)
