[MEncoder-users] how to add black borders?

hello list,

i'm creating some dvds from assorted video files. as a reference i'm
using the manual section "14.7. Using MEncoder to create VCD/SVCD/DVD
-compliant files". 

i can't say i understand every option in the command line, but i get
very good results following the examples.

but there's one problem: many of the videos have aspects very different
from 4/3 or 16/9. 

the manual mentions something like that:

"If your movie has 2.35:1 aspect (most recent action movies), you will
have to add black borders or crop the movie down to 16:9 to make a
DVD [...]"

i don't want to crop my files, but i can't find where it's explained
how to add black borders (i only find how to _crop_ black border from a
dvd when ripping to an avi file).
