Here's the log output. One thing I noticed is that mencoder mentions its 
using "bitrate=687kbit/s", but later on, mencoder says the video stream 
is 3056.743 kbit/s.

Just to put you into context, the original mpg file was around 5.5GB and 
after the encoding, the avi file shrunk to only 2.8GB. With the exact 
settings I used to be able to shrink any mpeg recordings to around 20% 
of its original size, but for the last couple of weeks, I'm only able to 
shrink to 50% of its size (at best).
