You're correct.  I should have been paying more attention.

I can't guess what the problem may be.  You haven't included the output
of mencoder, so I don't even know what version you're using, or what
errors mencoder might be reporting.  It's entirely possible it is a bug,
so you should probably read bugreports.html in the Docs.
