Thanks for the suggestions.  I've been reading the online docs and
experimenting with a number of values, including higher bitrates. 
Increasing the bitrate seems to help with the blockiness, but I can't
figure out how to get rid of the orange streaks.  Here's an example:

This particular screenshot is from a video using the command quoted above,
but increasing the bitrate doesn't seem to resolve the issue.  Any idea
what might be wrong?

Mario mentioned a possible with 16 bit images.  I'm assuming he meant 16
bits per color channel?  I'm pretty sure my images are only 8 bits per
channel, although I'm not quite sure how to verify this.
