try mplayer mf://*.jpg to see if mplayer can play them or if not, use
imagemagik to convert them to png and try mplayer/mencoder on them again.

also pre7 is very old mplayer release, and a new release is in the works.
you can get a CVS RPM from http://rpm.greysector.net/mplayer/ (it is the
official mplayer rpm)
