I just sent this announcement to mencoder-users at mplayerhq.nu -- it seems
relevant here as well. I figured I might be able to save someone the irritation
of having to spend an hour experimenting with options in order to figure out
which ones the TiVo accepts. (I took the shortcut of asking a friend of mine
who's an engineer there!)
Hope this helps someone!

Subject: mencoder-tivo -- mencoder wrapper to create TiVo-readable files
I wrote a small script which will run mencoder with the correct options to
create a file that can be transferred to a TiVo.

I included options to allow the user to set the resolution and bitrate, as well
as an option to create a low-quality file. It's written in Perl, and requires
mencoder to be in the path.
