Err, not with libavcodec (used by MPlayer/Xine/etc), except maybe for
detecting which bug workarounds should be tried.

On other platforms like Windows/Mac, different fourccs cause different
decoders to be used.  If you make an mpeg4 video with b-frames, the
Divx5 codec won't play it back properly, while the Xvid codec will work
fine.
