You are, I hope, going to use more elaborate -lavcopts when doing final
encoding, aren't you?

No, it's quite normal. You may try different pullup modes though to see
if you get better results, i.e. -vf pullup=::::-1 (less strict breaks) or
-vf pullup=:::::1 (use chroma plane). See man mplayer.

Assuming this reall is telecine (and it appears so), definitely NOT.
