My guess is that he meant that performing a binary search on a CVS tree
to track down the cause of a breakage is inefficient, because of the
time needed to compile and test each new candidate manually (and I can
testify to the same, having done a few on the Wine tree) and/or the
bandwidth necessary to jump back and forth in the CVS timeline; I
understood him as saying that since in this case the nature of the
problem was known, it would have been better to look in the CVS-log
mailing list for commits which could have caused that problem and then
just test those.
