Unfortunately none.

Seems that the crucial difference is MPEG1-ES vs. MPEG1-PS: the former works, the latter 
no. Here is the command line I use now:

mencoder -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video:vbitrate=1150:keyint=18 -of rawvideo \
-mc 0 -noskip -vf harddup -mf type=png:w=320:h=416:fps=25 -nosound -o $movie mf://img*.png
