[MEncoder-users] Converting DIV3 464:352 -> RAW 320:240 fails

Greetings,

first of all, this excact same message was posted on linuxquestions.org
some days ago, so forgive me if you read it a second time.
Unfortunately, it did not receive too much attention, not to mention
solutions, which is why I turn here.

At the moment, I seem to be stuck at a strange problem with mencoder.
Well, strange for me, as I know little about video formats. I guess the
gurus here will have no problems figuring it out.

I am trying to recode several video files, about 15 GB at the moment,
from DivX3 to RealMedia10 to get them onto a single DVD. This is
possible, from my calculations, using the DSL preset of the RealMedia
Producer 10. But alas, I have to reduce them in size, from 464:352 to
320:24[0||2]. And this is where the hassle starts: RealMediaProducer
needs RAW input files, which works well, if I do not change mencoder
output in size. But when recoding the DivX videos into the desired
format _and_ size, be it directly or with RAW 464:352 inbetween, the
video stream gets lost somehow: Mplayer bails out with a "No codec for
0x50343434" message, and Real Producer doesen't even notice it. Resizing
during a streamcopy does not work at all, although I suppose it should,
so I do not know if this is a problem with RAW format or something - as
said before, I am no multimedia specialist. Changing syntax (-vf
scale=320:240 -> -vf scale -xy 320 and similiar) doesen't help either.

Here is the command I use:

mencoder file.avi -force-avi-aspect 1.333 -ovc raw -oac pcm -vf
dsize=4/3,format=yuy2,scale -zoom -xy 320 -o test.avi

or the form substituted as suggested above.

Playing the RAW file generated from

mencoder file.avi -ovc raw -oac pcm -o test.avi

works well, however - it is just the resizing that breaks it.

The video stream in the resized file can even be read somehow: if I use
the -rawvideo parameter to mplayer, toying around with its options a
bit, there are a few frames that appear to be OK between a lot of
garbage.

Well, hope you can help me on this one, as my hard disk is getting
stuffed :)

Thanks a lot,
David

[Note: Just giving me parameters to mplayer to be able to view it won't
help, of course. I would like best to know what makes it different from
the playable (and RM-encodable) RAW version with original size.]
