Sorry, I just spotted this a minute after writing:
    #define AV_NOPTS_VALUE
        ((int64_t)UINT64_C(0x8000000000000000))
on the same page as AV_TIME_BASE

Again, it might be worth mentioning this in the place where new users
are looking, i.e. the AVFrame pts paragraph
