I gave this a try. But – everything else being equal except that I now set codec->pix_fmt to AV_PIX_FMT_YUV444P rather than AV_PIX_FMT_YUV420P, and sws_getContext also uses AV_PIX_FMT_YUV444P – my call to avformat_write_header returns opt = NULL.

The truth is that the quality of YUV420P is good. If you have any thoughts on how I can correct the error from avformat_write_header I’ll be happy to give it a try.
